Dermatologists can specialize in a particular field. Dermatology is basically the specialized branch of medicine dealing specifically with the skin. It is actually a specialty with both surgical and non-surgical aspects involved. A dermatologist is basically a professional medical doctor who deals with disorders of the skin, hair, nails, eczema, acne, and many other cosmetic issues. They normally treat diseases of the skin such as psoriasis, acne, and even genital warts.
Before dermatology residency program, doctors must complete either a degree or an undergraduate degree in an area of medicine. After graduation, they must pass a board certification exam. After the completion of the residency program, they will be required to take a national board exam to become a full-fledged dermatologist. The National Board of Medicine certifies these doctors. If a doctor passes this exam, he will be certified to practice in his state. If his board certification is not current, he may need to get it re-certified.
In the United States, there are actually eleven dermatology clinics in the entire country. These clinics are located in Chicago, Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; New York City, New York; Washington, D.C; Orange County, California; Sarasota, Florida; San Diego, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Dallas/Fryland, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Many of these doctors work in private practices but the most prominent ones still work for the same institutions. The dermatologists can find job opportunities almost everywhere in the United States.
To become a dermatologist, one will have to finish a four-year degree from an accredited medical school. He will need to also pass the board certification exam and then be able to sit for a medical school admission interview. After this he will be required to sit for four years of residency in a specialty. After the dermatologist completes his residency, he will be able to practice in his area by taking an additional six years to complete his degree.
A typical day for a dermatologist includes seeing about three hundred patients. In his office he will have his patient’s records ready which he will use to determine a diagnosis. When the diagnosis has been made, he will give the patient his prescriptions and information on how to take care of his wounds. Dermatologists work with all kinds of people including people with sensitive skin, nail problems and hair loss.
