Importance of Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Although a trapped sciatic nerve is the most common cause, compression may also be the cause. Pain that radiates from the lower back to one or both legs is the most common symptom. A lack of sensation or a feeling of weakness in the affected region is often present. read more

Treatments that operate at home

If the pain is minor, there are a number of remedies that can be done at home that are likely to be successful. There are some of them: Anti-inflammatories are medications that help to reduce inflammation in the body. Simple over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, may be safe, but consult your pharmacist first.

A chiropractor may be able to determine what is causing the discomfort. A visit to a chiropractic clinic can be worthwhile if you prefer a drug-free alternative. A variety of treatments, such as spinal manipulation, ice therapy, ultrasound, or TENS, can be used in your care.

Workout

Easy exercises have been shown to improve flexibility and decrease the risk of recurrence. The McKenzie exercises, in particular, have been shown to be especially successful when performed over a period of time. Exercising will also help to strengthen the muscles in the affected areas and treat the underlying causes of sciatica.

Using Ice as a Treatment

This has been shown to minimise swelling and slow inflammation when applied during the first 48 hours. Applying ice to the infected area for up to 20 minutes when wrapped in a towel will aid recovery and increase mobility.

Take a break.

Surprisingly, lying in bed for extended periods of time is not advised. A small amount of exercise is thought to improve, while total inactivity is thought to worsen the symptoms.

While rest is recommended, if the pain is not too serious, get out of bed and walk around. Consult the doctor if you’re suffering from chronic or serious pain. He or she will be able to prescribe stronger pain relievers. Remember that sciatica may be a symptom of a variety of other health conditions and illnesses, so it’s important to seek medical advice if you’re experiencing it.
